Information on the Images of Star Formation in the L1641 Molecular Cloud

The X-Ray Images

The x-ray images are extracted from data taken with the PSPC wide field imager on the ROSAT satellite. The point spread function of this instrument grows rapidly as one moves away from the center of the image. Therefore x-ray images are only shown for regions which fell reasonably near the center of the field.

The Optical Images

The optical images (4000 Å to 9000 Å) were taken at Kitt Peak National Observatory on the 0.9 meter telescope using a 2048 × 2048 pixel CCD. A set of standard filters were used to image these regions in the B band (4300 Å), V band (5500 Å), R band (6500 Å) and I (7500 Å ). Portions of these frames are reproduced here.

The Near Infrared Images

The near infrared images were taken with the SQIID instrument on the 1.3 meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. This instrument allows you to obtain simultaneous images at up to 4 near infrared bands. These pseudocolor images are made by accurately aligning the images at J (1.25µ), H (1.65µ) & K (2.2µ) and assigning them to the blue, green and red planes using the COLOR software package written under IRAF by Frank Valdes of the National Optical Astronomy Observatories.

The IRAS Images

The longer wavelength infrared images (> 10µ) are taken from maximum entropy reconstructed images of data from the IRAS satellite. The detectors used on this satellite were highly elongated, therefore the spatial resolution is much higher in one direction than in the other. In the case of these images of L1641, the best resolution is in Declination; the poorest resolution is in Right Ascension. The apparent shape of the sources reflects the shape of the detectors and not the sources themselves.
