Native Storiers: An American Narrative Series

This new series from the University of Nebraska Press will publish original emergent narratives by Native Americans. The narratives should be written in a style that portrays the diverse experiences inherent in Native communities and cultures. The series will be open to a wide range of literary styles of fiction from straight narrative to experimental forms such as the communal first-person, broken narratives, shape-changing transformations, or any construct which depicts Native American life. The series is looking for manuscripts that register, construct, or depict an ethos of survivance. The series will include novellas, short, interrelated stories, and other narratives that may tease style, voices, point of view, identities, ideologies, and cultural boundaries. The series takes into the fictional arena an elasticity of voice, subject and style, to uncover the diversity inherent in the Native cultures, such as issues of mixed-blood identities. It is particularly important not to limit the expectations as native writings continue to thrive and expand.

Another important aspect of NATIVE STORERS is its concentration on shorter fiction, which will be another hallmark of the series. The average length of the books will be about 150 pages.

The main standard of the NATIVE STORIERS series will be good writing and a marked ability for story-telling, which will contribute to the growing audience of native work. This audience includes the general reader, the academician who teaches Native Studies, American Studies, Cultural Studies, and Contemporary American Literature. This series is an emergent literature for a new culture of readers.

Gerald Vizenor and Diane Glancy will be the series editors. The series editors will recommend manuscripts for publication to the acquisitions editor at the press. The recommended manuscripts will be sent to two outside reviewers for their evaluation.
